Every image has a level
An image is evidence only within the level it came from. Reading a picture at the wrong level is how an image gets stretched into a claim it does not make.
The five levels
1. Thumbnail
A small preview. Enough to recognize an item, not enough to judge it.
2. Product-page image
The seller’s presentation of the item. It shows what the seller wants you to see.
3. Seller image
One seller’s view of an item. It is not the specific unit you would receive.
4. Specific-order photo
Applies to one order, at one stage. It does not generalize to the whole item.
5. Warehouse photo
What is visible at a moment. Still not a certification of quality or authenticity.
AnnotationNo single level proves quality or authenticity by itself. Each level answers one question only.
Avoid over-reading
- Do not treat a thumbnail as a full inspection.
- Do not treat a seller image as the unit you will receive.
- Do not treat a warehouse photo as a quality guarantee.
?Open item: which level does this image belong to, and what does that level leave unproven?
A worked read
- Thumbnail: you recognize the item.
- Product page: the seller’s presentation is visible.
- Warehouse photo: one moment, one unit, still not certification.
